The Agbor community in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State has been thrown into mourning following the death of a 72-year-old man, Sunday Aimiyekagbon, who was swept away by floodwaters while returning home on his motorcycle. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, along Imudia Street, off Charles Street, following a torrential rainfall that lasted several hours.

According to residents, the flood rose rapidly, making the road impassable and turning the area into a dangerous waterway. Eyewitness accounts revealed that the elderly man had parked his motorcycle near a concrete drainage channel and taken shelter in a nearby makeshift shop as the rain intensified. However, as the floodwaters surged, the motorcycle was swept into the fast-flowing drainage. In a desperate attempt to retrieve his motorcycle, Mr Aimiyekagbon reportedly entered the water but was overwhelmed by the strong current and swept away.

Residents said his body was later recovered, bringing a tragic end to the incident. The heavy downpour, which lasted from about 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., caused widespread flooding across Agbor, with drains overflowing and strong currents flowing through several streets.

The deceased's son, Ambrose Aimiyekagbon, described the loss as heartbreaking and appealed for lasting solutions to the persistent flooding that affects many parts of Agbor. "We are tired of losing loved ones to these avoidable floods," he said. "Every time it rains heavily, we live in fear. The government must act now to save lives."

Other residents also called on the Delta State Government and the Ika South Local Government Council to improve drainage infrastructure and address blocked waterways to help prevent similar tragedies. They noted that the recurring floods continue to endanger lives and destroy property whenever heavy rains fall in Agbor.

The heartbreaking incident has renewed concerns over the vulnerability of communities in Delta State to flooding, with many residents calling for urgent action to address the drainage crisis. As the family of the deceased mourns, the community is left to grapple with the painful reality of yet another life lost to the devastating impact of floods.
