Residents of Edo State have begun voting in the local government elections as citizens across the state participate in the process of electing chairmen and councillors to oversee affairs at the grassroots level.
The election, which commenced on Saturday, July 11, 2026, is being conducted across the 18 local government areas of Edo State, with voters expected to choose representatives responsible for managing local administration and community development initiatives.
The exercise is being supervised by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), which is responsible for organising and conducting local government polls in the state. Electoral officials were deployed to polling units across different communities to facilitate voting and ensure compliance with electoral procedures.
Early reports from some polling locations indicated that voters arrived to exercise their civic rights, while election officials worked to manage the process and ensure materials reached designated polling centres.
The local government elections come at a time when stakeholders continue to emphasise the importance of effective grassroots governance in addressing issues directly affecting residents, including infrastructure, sanitation, local security, education support and community development.
Political parties participating in the election have campaigned for the support of residents, presenting their candidates and outlining their plans for improving governance at the local level.
Security agencies were also deployed to maintain peace and order during the exercise, with authorities urging voters and political actors to conduct themselves peacefully and respect the electoral process.
The Edo State Government and electoral authorities have encouraged residents to participate actively while assuring citizens that measures have been put in place to support a transparent and orderly election.
Results from the various polling units are expected to be collated after voting concludes, with final outcomes to be announced by EDSIEC in accordance with electoral guidelines.
The election is seen as a significant test of grassroots democratic participation in Edo State, as local government institutions remain a key channel for delivering public services and responding to community needs.
