Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has completed a stunning return to South African Premiership side Chippa United, five months after leaving the club in pursuit of a lucrative move to Europe that ultimately failed to materialise. Chippa United confirmed the Nigeria international's return in a statement on Sunday, 12 July 2026, welcoming the shot-stopper back to the Eastern Cape ahead of the new season.

Nwabali had bid an emotional farewell to Chippa United in February after expressing his desire to seek a new challenge following his impressive performances for both club and country. The 30-year-old was widely expected to secure a move abroad after enhancing his reputation with standout displays for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire, where the Super Eagles finished as runners-up, and the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, where he helped Nigeria secure a bronze medal.
His consistent performances in the South African top flight attracted interest from clubs in Europe, North Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Tanzania. His most advanced negotiations were reportedly with Tanzanian club Simba SC, but the proposed transfer collapsed due to disagreements over personal terms and financial conditions. Other sources claimed he was eyeing moves to the English Premier League, with Manchester United a preferred destination, but all those talks failed to yield any dividend.
However, despite months of speculation, no transfer materialised, leaving the goalkeeper without a club during the off-season. During his spell without a club, Nwabali missed Nigeria's last four matches, including high-profile international friendlies against Poland and Portugal. In his absence, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle turned to Maduka Okoye, Francis Uzoho and new boy Arthur Okonkwo of Wrexham FC to prosecute Nigeria's international outings.
