The Oyo State Fire Service has successfully rescued a six-month-old baby from a blazing residential building at Olomi Compound in the Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo State, preventing what could have been a tragic loss of life. The fire broke out at approximately 8:38 p.m. on Saturday, 11 July 2026, when an unattended gas leak ignited on the ground floor of a private one-storey building comprising three rooms.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Fire Services Reform, Morrof Akinwande, said the agency received a distress call from a resident, Mr Abiodun Mayowa, reporting the fire outbreak. Fire personnel, led by PFS II Oluwaleye, were immediately mobilised and promptly arrived at the scene to find the ground floor engulfed in flames.
The firefighting crew swiftly commenced operations and successfully extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the upper floor of the building and adjoining properties. In a remarkable feat of bravery, the emergency responders rescued a six-month-old baby alive from the burning apartment. "A baby of about six months was successfully rescued alive from the burning building," Akinwande confirmed.
Preliminary investigations attributed the fire outbreak to an unattended gas leak. Following the operation, the Officer-in-Charge conducted a brief fire safety lecture for the occupants and sympathisers, educating them on essential fire prevention measures to prevent future occurrences. Akinwande urged members of the public to observe basic fire safety precautions by ensuring the proper installation, regular inspection, and maintenance of LPG cylinders and gas appliances. He also emphasised the importance of installing appropriate fire extinguishers in residential buildings, shops, and offices to enhance emergency preparedness.
