In a heart-wrenching incident that has sent shockwaves through the Shagari community in Akure, Ondo State, a 47-year-old father of five, Idris Abiodun Clement, was shot dead in the early hours of Friday, 3 July 2026, while bravely confronting armed robbers who invaded his home in a desperate attempt to defend his family. The tragedy, which occurred at approximately 1 a.m., has left a family shattered and a community in mourning, while raising fresh concerns over the persistent wave of armed robbery attacks in the Ondo State capital.

According to accounts provided by the deceased's son, AbdulFatai Clement, the armed robbers stormed the Shagari neighbourhood around 1 a.m., moving from house to house and terrorising residents. The robbers had already attacked two other houses before forcing their way into the Clement family compound. When they entered, the father, a popular refrigeration and air-conditioning technician widely known for his generosity, refused to cower. He confronted one of the robbers to defend his family, unaware that there were about three or four of them heavily armed. What followed was a brutal and fatal assault. The robbers attacked him with axes and cutlasses before one of them produced a firearm and shot him at close range. The assailants fled immediately after he collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital but had lost so much blood that doctors could not save him.

The victim, a father of five and a well-respected figure in the community, was described by friends and family as a peaceful, hardworking, and kind-hearted man. A close friend who identified himself simply as Hakeem paid tribute to the deceased, describing him as a technician who repaired freezers and air conditioners and always encouraged others to succeed. He said the deceased was popular, humble, and kind-hearted, and his loss would be deeply felt by all who knew him.

The deceased's widow, Mrs Taibat Clement, appealed to the Ondo State Government and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for her husband's killing are brought to justice. She described her husband as a hardworking, peaceful, and responsible family man whose death had left an irreplaceable void in the family. The widowed mother is now left to care for five children alone, grappling with the sudden and violent loss of her husband and the family's breadwinner.

Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Command said one suspect had been arrested in connection with the robbery and murder. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, stated that the suspect is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department and is assisting detectives with their investigation. He assured the bereaved family and residents of the command's commitment to ensuring justice is served and that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the robbery gang who are still at large. The police have also appealed to members of the public to provide useful information that could assist in tracking down the remaining suspects.

The killing of Idris Clement has sparked outrage and grief among residents of Shagari and the wider Akure community. Many have expressed fear over the rising insecurity in the state capital, calling on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property. For the family of Idris Clement, the pain of losing a husband and father in such a brutal manner is immeasurable. As the police continue their investigation and search for the fleeing gang members, the family and community await justice, hoping that the arrest of the suspect will be the first step toward holding all those responsible accountable for the death of a man who died protecting his family.
