A joint security team comprising troops of the Nigerian Army and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a suspected explosives-making expert allegedly linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Abia State. The arrest was carried out in the early hours of Sunday, 12 July 2026, at about 3:50 a.m., at Ummuene Community in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state, according to security sources who spoke with counter-terrorism expert Zagazola Makama.

According to the sources, troops from the Headquarters of the 14 Brigade, acting on credible intelligence and working in collaboration with DSS operatives from the Abia and Enugu State Commands, raided the suspect's hideout. The operation resulted in the arrest of the suspect, who is believed to be an explosives-making specialist for the IPOB/ESN network. Two mobile phones were recovered from the suspect during the operation.

The suspect and the recovered items have been handed over to the DSS Abia State Command for further investigation and other necessary actions. The arrest is part of ongoing intelligence-led security operations aimed at dismantling criminal and extremist networks operating in the South-East.

The development comes as security forces intensify operations across the South-East to curb the activities of IPOB and ESN, which have been linked to attacks on security personnel, government facilities, and civilians. The Nigerian Army and other security agencies have repeatedly warned that they would not tolerate any act of violence or destabilisation in the region. The arrest of the suspected explosives expert is seen as a significant blow to the group's capacity to manufacture improvised explosive devices and carry out coordinated attacks. As investigations continue, security agencies have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security formation.
