A commercial tricycle driver, popularly known as a keke operator, has lost his life in a tragic road accident at a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) checkpoint in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Monday, 13 July 2026. The incident occurred when a fully loaded cement trailer rammed into the tricycle from behind while the FRSC officials had stopped the vehicle at the checkpoint, crushing the driver and killing him instantly.
According to eyewitness accounts, the tricycle had been flagged down by FRSC personnel at the checkpoint along the busy Yenagoa route when the trailer, reportedly travelling at high speed, failed to stop and crashed into the stationary tricycle. The impact was devastating, leaving the tricycle mangled and the driver dead at the scene. The trailer driver, who initially sped off after the collision, was later apprehended by FRSC officials who gave chase. The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to face prosecution for dangerous driving and reckless operation of a vehicle resulting in death.
The FRSC has since condemned the incident, describing it as avoidable and a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and the failure of some motorists to obey traffic regulations, particularly in areas where safety checks are conducted. The FRSC Bayelsa State Sector Commander, who was not immediately available for comment, has ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. A statement from the command is expected to be released later.
The tragic death of the keke driver has sparked grief among colleagues and residents of Yenagoa, with many calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and better road safety measures. This incident is the latest in a series of fatal accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles on Nigerian roads, where trailers and tankers are often involved in crashes due to brake failure, speeding, or driver fatigue. As the family of the deceased mourns their loss, the Bayelsa State Government and relevant authorities are under renewed pressure to address road safety challenges and ensure that justice is served for the victim and his loved ones.
