Residents of Omupo in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State have rescued a newborn baby boy who was abandoned along a farm road shortly after birth, with the infant's placenta still attached when he was discovered by passersby . The incident, which occurred on Sunday, 12 July 2026, has sparked widespread concern and condemnation among community members, who described the abandonment as heartbreaking and expressed gratitude that the child was found alive .
According to reports, the newborn was found by passersby along a farm path in the Omupo community. The concerned residents quickly alerted others in the area before rushing the baby to the Omupo Cottage Hospital for urgent medical attention . The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Ismail Bakare, confirmed the incident on Monday, 13 July 2026, stating that the baby was brought to the facility alive and has since been placed under medical observation .
Dr Bakare said the infant is stable and responding well to treatment, but emphasised that he would require sustained medical care, proper nutrition and adequate support in the coming weeks to aid his recovery and development . "The baby was brought to the hospital after being found abandoned along a farm path. He is stable and responding well to treatment," Bakare said .
The incident has sparked concern among residents, who have called on government agencies, humanitarian organisations, corporate bodies and other well-meaning Nigerians to support the child's welfare by providing baby supplies and other necessities . Community members also expressed hope that authorities would investigate the circumstances surrounding the case and take steps to ensure the child's long-term wellbeing . The Kwara State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report .
