A coalition of youths under the aegis of Enugu Youths for Change has called on the Enugu State Police Command to launch a thorough investigation into a viral video circulating on social media, which allegedly shows an unidentified man being shot by a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the state. The group, in a statement signed by its Coordinator, Barr. Nnamani Ejiofor, and made available to journalists in Enugu on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, warned that the continued silence surrounding the matter has raised serious concerns about the safety of residents and the commitment of law enforcement agencies to tackling crime.
According to the group, the viral video features a man whose identity has yet to be established, with claims that he was shot by Hon. Nelson Arum, a chieftain of the NDC. Ejiofor said preliminary observations of the location captured in the video suggested that the incident allegedly occurred at the residence of the NDC chieftain on Flamengo Street, Trans Ekulu Estate, also known as Zoo Estate. He noted that the area is home to several prominent personalities, including the Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, and former Governor Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, adding that the silence surrounding the matter was portraying Enugu State in a negative light. Ejiofor stressed that the group was not seeking to condemn anyone but was demanding that due process be followed in the interest of justice and public confidence.
The group expressed concern that the continued circulation of the video had generated anxiety among residents, many of whom were demanding clarification from the relevant security agencies. Ejiofor argued that leaving the allegations without a proper investigation could encourage speculation, create fear among the public, and erode confidence in law enforcement. He further alleged that some police officers attached to the Abakaliki Road Division of the Enugu State Police Command had claimed the incident occurred late last year. However, he said the explanation had raised more questions than answers, as many people who watched the video believed it depicted a recent incident.
Ejiofor maintained that if the incident indeed occurred several months ago, the public deserved to know whether an investigation had been conducted, whether anyone had been questioned, and the outcome of such an investigation. He insisted that no individual should be above the law, regardless of political position, wealth, or social status, and called on the Enugu State Commissioner of Police and the Inspector-General of Police to ensure a thorough investigation into the allegations. "We call on the Nigeria Police Force to carry out a thorough, open and professional investigation into this matter. If the allegations are false, let the public know through facts. If any crime was committed, those involved should face the law. Justice should never depend on social status, political affiliation or influence," Ejiofor declared.
The coordinator further appealed to residents with useful information relating to the incident to cooperate with investigators by providing credible evidence to assist in establishing the true circumstances surrounding the viral video. He said the group would continue to monitor developments and ensure that the matter was not swept under the carpet. The Enugu State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the matter as of the time of filing this report. The group's call for a transparent investigation reflects growing public demand for accountability and due process in cases involving politically exposed persons. As the video continues to circulate online, residents and civil society organisations are watching closely to see whether the authorities will act decisively to uncover the truth behind the disturbing allegations.
