A tragic road accident has claimed the life of Rebecca Kambai, a 19-year-old 500-level student of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State, who was killed on Tuesday evening by a hit-and-run driver while returning home after collecting her belongings at the Bauchi Motor Park. The accident occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. on July 14, 2026, along the Bauchi–Jos Road in front of the Police Officers' Mess, according to a First Information Report issued by the RS12.1 Bauchi Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps. The crash involved a privately owned Jincheng motorcycle with registration number TFB-38-QB and affected two victims—an adult male who sustained injuries and an adult female who died at the scene.

According to a family source, Rebecca had returned home for the holidays and was awaiting her National Youth Service Corps mobilization. She had forgotten some of her belongings at school and arranged for friends in Azare to send them to her. When the driver transporting the items arrived at the Bauchi Motor Park near Awala Hotel, he contacted Rebecca to pick them up. One of her brothers then took her on his motorcycle to collect the items. After the handover, Rebecca reportedly decided to ride back on the same motorcycle with her brother. However, as they approached the Police Officers' Mess along the Bauchi–Jos Road and were about to turn into their neighbourhood in the New GRA, a Sharon minibus allegedly rammed into the motorcycle. Rebecca struck her head on the road, sustaining a fractured skull that claimed her life at the scene, while her brother suffered injuries.

The FRSC report indicated that the incident was reported at 5:20 p.m., and officials arrived at the scene 10 minutes later. Items recovered from the scene included the motorcycle, a women's hair stretcher, and a pair of shoes. The injured brother was taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where he is receiving treatment, while Rebecca's remains were deposited at the hospital mortuary. The FRSC has launched an investigation into the crash, but as of the time of filing this report, no arrest had been announced in connection with the hit-and-run incident.

Reacting to the heartbreaking loss, Rebecca's mother, Mrs. Doris Kambai, paid an emotional tribute to her daughter, describing her as her "favourite" and "last baby" who took after her in so many ways. "I am the mother of Rebecca, whom we just lost yesterday. It is truly a time of grief for the whole family. My daughter, my last baby, will be greatly missed. She was actually my favourite, and the siblings even know that. She took after me in so many ways, and I have been so proud of her. She was such an intelligent and brilliant girl. Her coming into my life was truly a blessing. Ever since she came into my life, so many things changed, and for that I am so grateful. Well, there is nothing we can do about it. God gives and He has taken away. May His name be forever praised," she said. She also expressed appreciation to everyone who stood by the family during the difficult time, praying that the Lord would reward each of them at the point of their needs. "In their own days of sorrow, may they meet people who will stand by them and comfort them. I am so grateful. Thank you so much," she added.

The tragic death of Rebecca Kambai, a 500-level student who had her entire future ahead of her, has left the family and community in deep grief. The Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. The FRSC has urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads and avoid hit-and-run incidents, warning that such actions constitute a criminal offence and carry legal consequences. The family has appealed to the authorities to ensure that the driver responsible for the fatal accident is identified and brought to justice. As the family prepares to mourn their loss, the search for the hit-and-run driver continues.
