The Delta State Police Command has arrested a popular Asaba-based content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, 40, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman, Favour Agbro, who later died by suicide after recording a viral video detailing her harrowing ordeal. The tragic incident, which has sparked widespread outrage across social media, has thrown a harsh spotlight on the dark underbelly of the burgeoning influencer industry, where trust and ambition are sometimes exploited with devastating consequences.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer for the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, the suspect was arrested on July 14, 2026, following a formal petition submitted to the Commissioner of Police by human rights activist Comrade Israel Joe. The allegations date back to June 1, 2026, when the deceased, a native of Ughelli North Local Government Area, travelled from Warri to Asaba at Ogbonna's invitation. The suspect had promised to train her on how to monetise her TikTok and Facebook pages through content creation, a programme he actively promoted on his social media platforms.

The case has taken a particularly harrowing turn with revelations from the activist's Facebook post detailing the victim’s state of mind before the trip. The young woman had allegedly informed the suspect during their WhatsApp conversations that she was a virgin and was not interested in a relationship, emphasizing that she was travelling solely for the professional training. The suspect reportedly assured her that the sessions would take place in a hotel but would remain strictly professional. However, upon her arrival in Asaba, the police allege that Ogbonna took her to a hotel, where he brutally raped her and subjected her to physical violence. The activist’s account detailed a scene of extreme brutality: “He forced her, covered her mouth and grabbed her brutally until she began to bleed profusely, yet did not give her food, drugs or anything to help her recover”.

The traumatised victim returned home to Warri in a visibly distressed state and immediately reported the incident to her parents. In the days that followed, she recorded a video in which she courageously recounted her experience and the emotional distress she was suffering. Shortly after making the video, she ingested a toxic substance in an apparent suicide attempt. Despite efforts to save her life, she later died. The video she recorded subsequently went viral on social media, leading to widespread calls for justice and prompting the police to act.

Confirming the arrest, SP Edafe stated that upon receipt of the petition, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Command in Effurun to carry out an immediate and thorough investigation. The police confirmed that the suspect has already made useful statements to investigators, and investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case. The Commissioner of Police has assured the family of the deceased and the public that the case will be thoroughly investigated and that no aspect of the allegations will be overlooked.

The arrest comes just days after the suspect was seen on Facebook making controversial remarks about women who request cash gifts from men online, drawing sharp criticism from his followers. The incident has ignited a fierce debate about the safety of young women seeking opportunities online and the responsibility of influencers and content creators. As the investigation continues, the tragic story of Favour Agbro serves as a sombre reminder of the dangers that can lurk behind promises of fame and fortune. The police have urged members of the public with useful information to come forward as the legal process moves forward.
