The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a father, Amos Paul, for allegedly inflicting grievous bodily harm on his 10-year-old daughter by burning her private part with a hot pressing iron as punishment for bedwetting. The suspect, a resident of Unaun, Upenme in Owo Local Government Area, was taken into custody on Thursday, July 16, 2026, after the incident was reported to the police.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Ondo State Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed in a statement that the victim sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, where she is currently receiving medical treatment. According to the police, the incident was reported on Thursday, July 16, 2026, and investigations revealed that the suspect used the hot pressing iron to burn his daughter's private part as punishment for bed-wetting.

Detectives from the 'A' Division in Owo responded swiftly after receiving the report, arrested the suspect, and took him into custody. The case has been transferred to the Gender Unit for discreet investigation and further necessary action. The police spokesman also confirmed that the suspect is expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, CP Felix Ohagwu, has strongly condemned the alleged act, describing it as "cruel, inhumane and completely unacceptable". He reaffirmed the command's commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable members of society from all forms of abuse, violence and exploitation. The Commissioner also urged members of the public to promptly report cases of child abuse, domestic violence and other related offences to the nearest police station, assuring that offenders would be brought to justice.

The Tribune newspaper reported that those who witnessed the sight of the burnt private part were said to have heaped curses on the father over the treatment meted out to his biological daughter. The Commissioner for Women Affairs in the state was also said to have taken over the matter on behalf of the state government.

The case has drawn widespread condemnation, highlighting the persistent issue of child abuse in Nigeria and the need for stronger protection of children's rights.
