The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has firmly dismissed as false and misleading a viral video and accompanying reports alleging that a lecturer of the institution was caught in an inappropriate act with a female student on campus. The university, in a statement issued on Thursday, July 16, 2026, by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, said that after due verification, it had been established that neither the incident nor the individuals involved had any connection with the institution.

The viral video, which has been circulating online since Wednesday, shows a group of students forcing their way into a lecturer's office in an attempt to apprehend him. Upon gaining entry, the lecturer reportedly jumped out of the office through a window and fled while partially clothed. The voiceover in the video claims that the incident occurred at UNIZIK, describing the lecturer as a "notorious randy" man who was allegedly well known at the institution. However, Attah categorically stated that the individuals seen in the video were neither staff members nor students of the university. "The man in question seen in the viral video is also not a staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University. For the records, no staff or student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University is connected in any way to the said incident," the statement read.

The university expressed concern over what it described as the increasing spread of misinformation and false narratives in the digital space, noting that the desire to break news quickly and attract online traffic often leads to the dissemination of unverified information. "The advent of citizen journalism, social media, and the rush to break news first and gain traffic have fuelled misinformation, disinformation, and the spread of outright falsehoods," Attah said. The institution urged members of the public, media organisations, and online platforms to desist from spreading unverified information and to take immediate steps to retract and correct such publications.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high standards of professional conduct, discipline, and ethical standards among its staff and students. "Staff members of the university are guided by strong ethics, while the university management also has zero tolerance for students' exploitation under any guise," the statement added. UNIZIK further emphasised that it will not allow itself to be associated with false reports capable of tarnishing its image and the reputation it has built over the years.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students has demanded a swift and transparent investigation into the allegations of sexual misconduct against the lecturer. In a statement issued by its National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, NANS stated that if the allegation is confirmed, it would represent a grave violation of professional conduct and a betrayal of the trust placed in academic staff. The association urged the university management to immediately investigate the incident and ensure the process is conducted transparently. NANS also demanded that the female student and any other whistleblowers be shielded from intimidation, victimisation, or reprisals. "NANS will not tolerate any form of harassment, abuse of power, or sexual misconduct within our institutions. Our campuses must be safe spaces for learning, not hunting grounds for predators," the statement read.

The development has sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians condemning the alleged conduct and calling for justice. However, with UNIZIK's emphatic denial, the focus has now shifted to identifying the actual institution where the incident occurred and ensuring that the alleged perpetrator is brought to book. The university has called on journalists to always verify facts with the appropriate authorities before publication, reiterating its open-door approach to information and communication.
