Operatives of the Yobe State Police Command have arrested a suspected drug baron and a notorious kidnapping kingpin operating within and outside the state, in separate intelligence-led operations that dealt significant blows to organised crime networks in the North-East. The breakthrough was disclosed in a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, on Saturday, July 18, 2026, according to multiple news reports.
The first operation, conducted by operatives of the Yindiski Divisional Police Headquarters in Potiskum, targeted a suspected drug warehouse belonging to Alhaji Abbas, 35, of Danchuwa Village in Potiskum Local Government Area. Acting on credible intelligence, police raided the facility on July 17, 2026, at about 2:50 p.m., arresting Abbas and recovering large quantities of illicit drugs. Items recovered included eight cartons of assorted hard drugs, one and a half Ghana-Must-Go bags containing Tramadol and Exzol tablets, and N835,500 suspected to be proceeds from the drug trade. The operation was met with violent resistance from members of the syndicate who attempted to free the suspect, but officers repelled the attack. A few police personnel sustained minor injuries and a police vehicle was damaged during the clash. The injured officers have been taken to hospital and are responding to treatment.
In a separate operation, operatives of the Potiskum Area Command arrested Saidu Mohammed, 40, of Jalam Village, Bauchi State, a suspected kidnapping kingpin and armed robbery suspect who had long been on the command’s watchlist. The arrest followed a complaint lodged on July 11, 2026, by a victim who reported receiving a threatening telephone call on July 10, 2026, at about 9:51 p.m. from phone number 09079401479. The caller demanded N10 million and threatened to kill the victim if he failed to relocate. Following a technically driven, intelligence-led investigation, detectives tracked and arrested Mohammed on July 15, 2026. Preliminary findings indicate that he allegedly operated across Bauchi, Yobe and Gombe states.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, commended the operatives for their gallantry and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating drug trafficking, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing members of both syndicates, while the arrested suspects are assisting police with useful information.
