Thousands of Facebook users across the globe were locked out of their accounts on Sunday, July 19, 2026, as the platform's desktop version suffered a widespread outage, displaying an alarming "Account Temporarily Unavailable" message to those attempting to log in via web browsers. The disruption, which began around 9 a.m. and continued into the afternoon, affected users in multiple countries, including the UK, US, Kenya, Malta, Vietnam, and Australia.
Users trying to access Facebook on their computers were greeted with the error message: "Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes". Outage-tracking platform Downdetector recorded a sharp spike in reports, with website access issues accounting for 32 per cent of complaints, followed by login problems at 26 per cent and news feed issues at 22 per cent. Reports indicated that the mobile app remained functional for most users, adding to the confusion as many feared their accounts had been banned.
The outage also affected Instagram and Messenger on desktop, further compounding user frustration. Frustrated users took to X (formerly Twitter) to report the disruption, with hashtags like #FacebookDown trending as they shared screenshots of the error messages. As of the time of filing this report, Meta had not issued an official statement explaining the cause of the disruption or provided a timeline for when normal service would be restored.
This incident is the second major outage to hit the platform in just over a month, following a similar global disruption on June 12 that affected Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. At that time, Meta also remained silent on the cause.
