West African leaders have gathered in Freetown, Sierra Leone, for the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States, a high-stakes summit that comes at a critical moment for the sub-region as it confronts mounting security threats, democratic backsliding, and economic challenges. The summit, hosted by Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, who currently chairs the ECOWAS Authority, is taking place at the newly inaugurated Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre in Lungi, near Freetown, on Sunday, July 19, 2026. Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is being represented at the summit by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who departed Abuja earlier on Sunday to join other regional leaders.
The 69th Ordinary Session marks the culmination of a series of preparatory meetings that have been underway throughout the week, including sessions of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, the Council of Ministers, and the Administration and Finance Committee.
