Bandits Kill Two, Shoot Driver on Bagega–Anka Road in Zamfara

A tragic incident occurred earlier today along the Bagega–Anka road in Zamfara State when bandits attacked travellers, killing two people and shooting the driver in the hand. The attack, which took place on Sunday, July 19, 2026, is yet another stark reminder of the persistent insecurity plaguing communities and travellers in the region.

According to an eyewitness account, the attackers opened fire on travellers along the highway, which serves as a vital route for residents of Bagega, a major gold mining community in Zamfara State. The road has been a recurring target for bandit attacks and explosive devices, with security forces previously conducting clearance operations to restore safe movement along the route.

The attack comes despite ongoing military operations in the area. Troops of Sector 2 based in Bagega have been actively responding to intelligence on terrorist movements in Anka Local Government Area, and security forces recently neutralised a notorious bandit kingpin, Kachalla Sani Yellow, who had terrorised the Anka–Bagega axis for years. However, the latest incident demonstrates that bandits continue to pose a significant threat to travellers and communities in the region.

Residents and travellers along the Bagega–Anka road have repeatedly called on the government and security agencies to take decisive action to end the cycle of violence that has turned the highway into a danger zone.
