Suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists have abducted the wife of a pastor and her three children in Damasak, the headquarters of Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State. The abduction occurred around midday on Saturday, July 18, 2026, near Kareto village along the Maiduguri-Damasak road.
The victims, whose identities have not been disclosed, were traveling from Maiduguri to Damasak in a commercial vehicle when the attackers intercepted them. The abducted woman is the wife of Reverend Moses G. Guguma, the resident pastor of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Damasak. The terrorists stopped the vehicle, singled out the pastor's wife and her three children, and ordered them to disembark.
A community source revealed that the woman had been discharged from a hospital in Maiduguri a few days earlier after a prolonged illness and was still recovering at the time of the abduction. According to an anonymous source, the terrorists allowed the driver and other passengers to continue their journey before disappearing into the bush with the pastor's family.
As of the time of filing this report, the whereabouts of the victims remain unknown. Security forces have not issued an official statement regarding the incident, and no communication from the kidnappers regarding any demands has been received. A family source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the victims were targeted specifically because of their religious identity. "As at now, we are holding a special prayer to God for the safe return of the victims," the source said.
Damasak, located in the Northern Borno Senatorial District approximately 156 kilometres from Maiduguri, has been a frequent flashpoint for insurgent activities in the Lake Chad Basin region. The area has witnessed repeated attacks and occupations by Boko Haram and its ISWAP splinter group in recent years. The abduction of the pastor's wife and children adds to the growing list of religiously motivated attacks targeting Christian communities in northeastern Nigeria.
