Troops of Sector 1, Operation Whirl Stroke, have launched a manhunt for suspected gunmen following an attack on Azebiam community in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, where one resident was shot. The attack occurred on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at approximately 3:23 p.m., when armed men stormed the community and opened fire on residents, according to a report by security analyst Zagazola Makama.
Troops stationed at Kyado were immediately mobilised after receiving a distress call from the community. By the time security personnel arrived at the scene, the attackers had already fled, leaving behind one resident with gunshot wounds. The injured victim was rushed to a medical facility for treatment, while troops intensified patrols across the community to prevent further attacks and track down those responsible for the assault.
Military authorities have since maintained a strong security presence in the area, with troops conducting sustained patrols to dominate the general area and forestall further attacks. Security personnel have also appealed to residents to continue providing timely intelligence to security agencies, stressing that public cooperation remains critical to ongoing operations aimed at curbing violent attacks in parts of Benue State.
The attack on Azebiam community is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have plagued Benue State in recent weeks, where armed groups have continued to target rural communities despite sustained military operations. Just days earlier, suspected gunmen had attacked Ankpechi community in Oglewu Ward, also in Ukum Local Government Area, shooting a resident and looting shops. The recurring attacks have heightened concerns over security in parts of Benue State, where communities continue to face threats from armed groups.
Governor Hyacinth Alia has previously condemned such attacks and ordered security agencies to launch manhunts for perpetrators and deploy additional personnel to vulnerable communities. The governor has described the attacks as senseless and cowardly assaults on innocent residents, particularly coming at a critical period when farmers have returned to their ancestral lands for the farming season.
As the manhunt continues, residents of Azebiam and surrounding communities have been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces by reporting any suspicious movements or activities. The military has assured the public that troops will maintain pressure on criminal elements and ensure that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
