President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of 26 individuals to the boards and leadership of 10 federal government agencies and commissions, in a sweeping exercise aimed at strengthening governance and public service delivery across key sectors of the economy. The appointments, announced on Monday, July 20, 2026, in a statement by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, take immediate effect. Among the appointees is former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, who was named Chairman of the board of the Rural Electrification Agency, a critical agency responsible for expanding electricity access to underserved and rural communities across Nigeria.
Fayose will head the REA board alongside Alhaji Ahmadu Abubakar and Engineer Ilyasu Ibrahim Makinta, who were appointed as members and non-executive directors. The board will also include the agency's incumbent Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, alongside the three executive directors previously appointed by the President. Fayose's appointment to head the REA board comes as a surprise to many political observers, given his background as a former governor of Ekiti State and a prominent member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. However, the President's decision to appoint him to such a strategic position underscores the administration's focus on technical competence and institutional capacity rather than partisan considerations.
In another key appointment, President Tinubu named retired Major General Junaid Bindawa as Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, the agency responsible for advising the Federal Government on remuneration policies and wage administration in the public service. Bindawa, a retired senior military officer with extensive experience in administration and public service, is expected to bring discipline and strategic oversight to the commission's operations. The President also appointed former Lagos lawmaker, Olajumoke Okoya-Thomas, as Secretary of the Commission. Dr Ogbole Ene Lilian, Oladele Olatubosun and Yakubu Umar Barde were appointed as commissioners representing Benue, Oyo and Kaduna states respectively. Other members appointed to the commission are Dr Mai Adamu Yau, Ginika Florence Tor, Engineer Lawrence Okoh and Bello Morenike Iyabode.
The President also made significant appointments to other strategic agencies. Dr Abuh Mohammed was appointed Director-General of the National Population Commission, a key agency responsible for demographic data and national census activities. Dr Akinola Odeyemi was named Managing Director of the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading company, which oversees bulk electricity purchases and market transactions within Nigeria's power sector. For the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, the President approved the appointment of Dr Anthony Inalegwu Godwin as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Engineer Julius Oloro was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation in Ilorin, Kwara State, replacing Dr A.R. Kamal, who died in January.
The President also reconstituted the board of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission, appointing Dr Abdullahi Maikano Saidu as Chairman. Other members of the board are Mohammed Asmau, Mohammed Aliyu Makama, Dr Suleiman Gidado, Louis O. Ndukwe, Amaechi Ugwele and Olaniyi Idowu Onikola. In addition, Shuni Muhammad Dahiru was appointed Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, replacing Professor Shu'aibu Shehu Aliyu, who was reassigned to the Petroleum Trust Development Fund in April. Tosin Johnson Adeyanju, who had earlier been appointed Executive Secretary of the National Lottery Trust Fund, was redeployed to serve as Secretary of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission. Furthermore, Gisaor Vincent Iorja, an economist and legal scholar currently serving as Secretary of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission, was named Executive Director (Finance) of the Federal Housing Authority, replacing Mathias Byuan, who resigned to pursue his governorship ambition in Benue State.
The appointments reflect the administration's drive to reposition critical government agencies and strengthen institutional capacity across key sectors of the economy. According to the Presidency, the new appointees are expected to bring fresh perspectives, technical expertise, and strategic leadership to their respective agencies, contributing to the government's broader agenda of improving service delivery and fostering economic development. All appointments take immediate effect.
