A fire outbreak caused by a power surge on Monday gutted four rooms in a storey building in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, but firefighters successfully contained the blaze and saved the remaining 14 rooms from destruction. The incident occurred at about 2:03 p.m. on Monday, July 20, 2026, at No. 40 Elesinla Compound, off Agbo-Oba Road in the Ilorin West Local Government Area.

The Kwara State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement by its Head of Media and Publicity, Hassan Adekunle. According to the statement, the fire involved an 18-room storey building, with four rooms affected before firefighters arrived and brought the blaze under control at approximately 2:50 p.m. Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was triggered by a power surge that ignited combustible materials within the affected section of the building.

Adekunle noted that the fire service received a distress call and promptly deployed firefighters to the scene, who successfully prevented the flames from spreading to the remaining rooms and adjoining properties. No casualties were recorded in the incident.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Chief Fire Superintendent Alabi Muhammed, has advised residents to ensure their buildings are equipped with standard electrical installations and surge protection devices to guard against electrical fluctuations. He also urged property owners to carry out periodic inspections and maintenance of electrical wiring, avoid overloading electrical sockets, and promptly report fire incidents to the fire service for swift intervention.

Muhammed reiterated the Fire Service's commitment to safeguarding lives and property through rapid emergency response and sustained public fire safety awareness across the state.
