The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old man, Clement Anthony, in connection with the alleged murder of a community leader, Jacob Bature, 55, who was shot dead on Sunday evening following an argument at a beer parlour in the Unguwar Ngas area of Bauchi metropolis. The police spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, adding that a locally made single-barrel gun and one empty cartridge were recovered from the suspect.
According to the police, the incident was reported at the 'A' Division Township Police Station on July 19, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m. by a 47-year-old resident of Unguwar Ngas. The complainant stated that the suspect, who is also a resident of the same area, allegedly armed himself with a locally made single-barrel gun and fired at Jacob Bature, who served as the Mai Anguwan Ngas (community head) of the Inkil area, Bauchi Local Government Area. The victim sustained serious gunshot injuries to his right ribs and slumped unconscious, leaving him in a coma.
He was immediately rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where a medical doctor examined him and confirmed him dead as a result of the gunshot wound. His remains have since been deposited in the hospital morgue for further investigation. According to community sources, the suspect and the victim engaged in a heated argument shortly before the shooting at a local beer parlour, with the disagreement escalating to the point where the suspect retrieved his gun and opened fire on the community leader.
Police operatives swung into action immediately after the report and arrested the suspect. During the arrest, the locally made single-barrel gun and one empty cartridge were recovered from him. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation, and the suspect is expected to be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the killing and reaffirmed the command's commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice. He urged members of the public to refrain from the unlawful possession of firearms and to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station. The police commissioner also assured residents that the command remains committed to tackling violent crimes, including murder, armed robbery, and the illegal possession of firearms across the state.
The shooting of Jacob Bature adds to growing concerns over the proliferation of locally made firearms in Bauchi State and their use in violent crimes. Security agencies have repeatedly warned against the illegal possession of weapons and have called on residents to provide credible information that could assist in preventing crime and improving community safety. As with all criminal allegations, Clement Anthony remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected from the police as the case progresses.
