The Ekiti State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on criminal activities with the arrest of a suspected serial motorcycle thief, two alleged receivers of stolen motorcycles, and the recovery of seven motorcycles believed to have been stolen from different parts of the state. The operation, carried out by operatives of the Command's Violent Crime Response Unit, followed credible intelligence that led to the interception of a suspect shortly after he allegedly stole a motorcycle in Ado-Ekiti.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, the breakthrough occurred on Saturday, July 18, 2026, when the VCRU received information that a suspect had stolen a red Bajaj motorcycle around the Olaoluwa Muslim Grammar School area of Ado-Ekiti and was escaping through the Ilawe Road axis. The statement explained that officers who were already conducting a stop-and-search operation along Ilawe Road immediately mobilised and launched a hot pursuit after sighting the suspect riding the stolen motorcycle. The suspect was subsequently apprehended, while the motorcycle was recovered.
The police identified the suspect as Mustapha Lekan, a 38-year-old indigene of Osun State. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to stealing two motorcycles within Ado-Ekiti, a revelation that prompted investigators to intensify their operation. The investigation later led detectives to Ilogbo-Ekiti and Ido-Ekiti, where two suspected receivers of stolen motorcycles, identified as Adebiyi Blessing and Ogunbayo Adebiyi, were arrested. The police disclosed that six additional motorcycles suspected to have been stolen were recovered during the follow-up operation, bringing the total number of recovered motorcycles to seven.
The command said efforts were ongoing to identify the rightful owners of the recovered motorcycles, while detectives continued investigations aimed at apprehending other members of the suspected criminal network. Commending the operatives for their swift response and professionalism, the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Michael Falade Adegoroye, described the operation as another testament to the command's commitment to intelligence-led policing and its determination to rid the state of criminal elements. He urged residents to continue supporting the police with timely and credible information capable of aiding crime prevention and detection, assuring them that the command remained resolute in protecting lives and property across the state.
The Commissioner also warned criminals to abandon unlawful activities or face the full weight of the law, adding that all the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The arrest of the suspected serial motorcycle thief and the recovery of seven motorcycles mark a significant victory in the Ekiti State Police Command's ongoing efforts to tackle motorcycle theft, which has become a growing concern in the state.
