Former Kano State Governor and prominent National Democratic Congress leader, Senator Kabiru Gaya, has agreed to rejoin the All Progressives Congress, a decision that follows a private meeting with the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, at his residence on Yaounde Street in Abuja. The closed-door meeting, which lasted approximately 45 minutes, was held on Monday night, July 20, 2026, with sources confirming that Gaya consented to return to the ruling party.
The development comes just days after Gaya reportedly lost the NDC senatorial ticket for Kano South, despite having recently defected to the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Gaya had resigned from the APC on April 5, 2026, briefly joined the African Democratic Congress, and later moved to the NDC alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Gaya, who served as Governor of Kano State during the Third Republic between 1992 and 1993, later represented Kano South Senatorial District in the Senate from 2015 to 2023 on the APC platform. He lost his re-election bid in 2023 to Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, who contested under the New Nigeria People's Party. His return to the APC, if formally announced, is expected to boost the party's political strength in Kano ahead of the next election cycle.
A source familiar with the meeting confirmed Gaya's agreement to return to the APC, stating: "Yes, Senator Kabiru Gaya has agreed to rejoin the APC". The meeting is believed to be part of the APC's ongoing efforts to attract influential opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections. Neither Yilwatda nor Gaya had issued an official statement on the reported defection as of the time of filing this report.
