The management of the Federal University Wukari (FUW), Taraba State, has announced a ban on all graduation sign-out activities within the university campus and its surrounding areas, citing security concerns and the need to maintain peace and order.
The decision was approved at the university's 76th Regular Senate Meeting after members considered a report on activities associated with graduation celebrations. According to the management, the ban is aimed at protecting lives and property while preserving a safe and conducive environment for learning.
Under the new directive, students are prohibited from engaging in traditional sign-out activities such as signing on T-shirts and other materials, organising processions, dancing in groups, holding public celebrations on campus and participating in convoys around the institution.
The university also banned parties and gatherings around the campus gates and along the Katsina-Ala–Jalingo Highway, as well as the spraying of money and any activity capable of causing traffic congestion, public disorder or security threats.
The management explained that while graduation is an important milestone worthy of celebration, recent experiences have shown that some sign-out activities have become unruly and pose risks to students, staff and members of the public.
University authorities directed campus security personnel to strictly enforce the new policy and warned that any student or group found violating the directive would face disciplinary action in line with the institution's regulations.
The management appealed to students, parents, guardians, alumni and members of the public to cooperate with the university by ensuring full compliance with the directive. It stressed that the decision was taken solely to safeguard lives and maintain a peaceful academic environment.
The university reiterated its commitment to providing a secure, disciplined and conducive learning environment where academic excellence can flourish. It added that maintaining safety on campus remains one of its highest priorities and that all members of the university community are expected to support measures aimed at promoting order and protecting lives.
The decision places Federal University Wukari among a growing number of Nigerian tertiary institutions introducing stricter regulations on graduation celebrations in response to concerns over security, public disturbances and unruly conduct associated with sign-out activities.
