Troops of the Nigerian Army's 17 Brigade have successfully repelled a bandit attack on Unguwar Fadi community in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State, preventing what residents described as a potentially devastating assault.
The attack occurred on Tuesday night when suspected bandits reportedly stormed the community. Residents immediately raised the alarm, prompting security forces to respond swiftly to the distress calls.
According to local accounts, the rapid intervention by the troops forced the attackers to abandon their operation and flee the area before they could inflict more damage on the community. Residents commended the soldiers for their prompt response, saying their arrival prevented what could have resulted in greater loss of lives and property.
Despite the successful intervention, the attack claimed the life of one resident, Usman Shitu, popularly known as Abba Shago. He was reportedly shot during the assault and later died from the injuries he sustained.
The incident has left the community in mourning, with residents expressing sadness over the loss while also expressing gratitude to the security personnel whose quick response helped prevent further casualties.
Katsina State has remained one of the states most affected by banditry in north-west Nigeria, with several rural communities experiencing attacks involving killings, kidnappings and cattle rustling. In response, the military and other security agencies have intensified operations aimed at dismantling criminal camps, protecting vulnerable communities and restoring peace across the state.
The latest operation underscores the importance of rapid security response in confronting armed attacks and protecting civilians in areas threatened by bandit activities. Community leaders have continued to encourage residents to promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies to enable timely intervention.
As investigations into the attack continue, residents have called for sustained security operations in the area to prevent further attacks and strengthen the safety of communities across Funtua Local Government Area.
