Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has sworn in a newly constituted State Executive Council, expanding the state's executive ministries from 18 to 23 as part of a major governance restructuring just 10 months before the end of his administration. The swearing-in ceremony, which took place on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at the International Conference Centre in Gombe, saw 23 Commissioners, 13 Special Advisers, one Permanent Secretary, and the new Head of Civil Service take their oaths of office, according to multiple reports. The expansion is part of ongoing reforms aimed at accelerating service delivery and strengthening governance in the final stretch of the governor's eight-year tenure.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Yahaya described the appointments as a call to selfless service and urged the appointees to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, diligence, transparency and the fear of God. He congratulated all the newly appointed public officers, noting that by taking the oath, they had affirmed their commitment to serve the people and contribute to the overall development of the state. The governor commended the Gombe State House of Assembly for its prompt screening and confirmation of the commissioner nominees, describing the cordial Executive-Legislature relationship over the past seven years as a major factor behind the administration's achievements.
Addressing the commissioners, the governor stressed that they had been carefully selected from across the state's Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas on the basis of competence, experience and diversity to advance the administration's development agenda. However, he reminded them that the administration was entering its final year in office and there was no time to waste. "You have less than a year to make your mark. There is absolutely no time for learning or institutional orientation; you need to hit the ground running immediately," he said. He noted that over the past seven years, the administration had transformed critical sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, security, rural development, and the public service, earning Gombe national recognition for good governance and sustainable development.
As part of the structural reforms, Governor Yahaya announced the expansion of the State Executive Council from 18 to 23 ministries, including the creation of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction and the Ministry of Livestock Development, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. He explained that the new Ministry of Livestock Development would promote livestock productivity, strengthen value chains, enhance food security, and stimulate rural economic transformation, further consolidating Gombe's position as a leading livestock-producing state. The governor also tasked the newly appointed Special Advisers with providing strategic, evidence-based advice to strengthen governance, while urging the Permanent Secretaries to uphold professionalism, fiscal discipline, and administrative efficiency.
The governor warned all political office holders against misconduct, corruption, and abuse of office, reminding them that public resources must be managed solely in the interest of the people. "This administration will not condone indiscipline, corruption or any act capable of tarnishing the hard-earned image of our government," he said. He also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to support the new officials in delivering on the government's development programmes. The governor further urged members of his administration to focus on performance rather than politics, stressing that "our achievements in office must serve as our strongest campaign tools because this government speaks through its work and verifiable performance".
