Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commended the Federal Government for suspending the proposed increase in the National Examinations Council (NECO) registration fees, describing the decision as a thoughtful and timely intervention that will ease the financial burden on millions of Nigerian families and promote access to quality education. The governor made the commendation on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, while distributing appointment letters to 4,900 newly recruited teachers for basic and secondary schools and officially engaging 3,688 facilitators under the Abba Gida-Gida Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) Cohort V programme.
According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf said the Federal Government's decision to halt the proposed fee hike demonstrated sensitivity to the economic realities facing many households across the country. He noted that the suspension would ensure that more students can register for the NECO examinations without additional financial constraints, thereby improving access to education for Nigerian students.
Governor Yusuf further commended President Bola Tinubu's administration for implementing various reforms aimed at improving access to quality education under the Renewed Hope Agenda. He also praised the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and the Universal Basic Education Commission for their commitment to promoting inclusive and affordable education nationwide. The governor noted that the timely release of UBEC counterpart funds had facilitated the construction and rehabilitation of schools, as well as the implementation of other basic education projects across the state.
Governor Yusuf also highlighted his administration's investment in education, disclosing that 31 per cent of the 2026 state budget had been allocated to the education sector. He noted that the investment was already yielding positive results, with Kano emerging as the best-performing state in this year's NECO examinations. The governor urged the newly employed teachers to discharge their duties with professionalism, integrity and dedication, noting that they had been entrusted with the responsibility of shaping the future of thousands of pupils.
The Federal Government had earlier suspended the proposed increase of WAEC and NECO registration fees to ₦50,000 for 2027 candidates following widespread public backlash from parents, students and education stakeholders. The Federal Ministry of Education announced that the letter conveying the proposed fee adjustment, dated June 18, 2026, had been withdrawn to allow for a comprehensive review and broader consultations before a final decision is taken. Governor Yusuf reiterated the state government's commitment to strengthening collaboration with the ministry, UBEC, NECO and other relevant agencies to invest in education for improved learning outcomes.
