A member of the All Progressives Congress, Mrs. Abimbola Olajumoke Olawumi, was allegedly abducted by suspected hoodlums on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, shortly after leaving the Court of Appeal in Abuja, where she had gone to obtain Certified True Copies of documents related to her legal challenge over the party's governorship primary election in Ekiti State.
According to multiple reports, the incident occurred at about 1:00 p.m. Sources familiar with the matter told news platforms that Olawumi had earlier appeared before the Supreme Court in person to press her appeal against the APC primary that produced Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji as the party's candidate. The Supreme Court reportedly granted her leave to appear as a litigant in person and, after she presented her arguments, directed her to first obtain Certified True Copies of relevant documents from the Court of Appeal before the matter could proceed further.
It was shortly after she left the Court of Appeal premises on Wednesday that the alleged attack occurred. A group of hoodlums reportedly assaulted her before bundling her into a black Sport Utility Vehicle, which sped off to an unknown destination. As of the time of filing various reports, Olawumi's whereabouts remained unknown, and no motive for the alleged abduction had been established.
The alleged kidnapping comes against the backdrop of Olawumi's protracted legal battle over the APC governorship primary in Ekiti State. In an earlier judgment, the Court of Appeal in Abuja had affirmed Governor Oyebanji's candidacy for the Ekiti governorship election after dismissing Olawumi's appeal challenging the outcome of the APC primary. In a unanimous judgment delivered by a three-member panel led by Justice Adebukola Banjoko, the appellate court held that Olawumi's appeal was incompetent. The court ruled that her appellant's brief violated the Court of Appeal Rules because it exceeded the prescribed page limit and was therefore unsupported by competent arguments. The appellate court also upheld the cross-appeal filed by Governor Oyebanji, ruling that the trial court erred in classifying Olawumi as an "aspirant" within the meaning of the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Nigeria Police Force were unsuccessful, as the Federal Capital Territory Police Public Relations Officer could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing various reports.
