Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered the immediate suspension of all activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in motor parks across the state, directing security agencies to arrest anyone parading as an official or executive of the union and to stop the collection of all levies. The directive, announced on Thursday, July 23, 2026, followed a meeting of the State Security Council convened by the governor to review the security situation arising from a factional crisis within the transport union.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the governor instructed the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to halt all NURTW operations in motor parks across the state. Adeleke clarified that the order does not amount to a shutdown of motor parks but is specifically targeted at the activities of the transport union. "I hereby direct the Police and other security agents to stop all activities of the union in all our parks across the state. I'm not saying you should close the parks, but you should not allow anyone to operate in the parks in the name of the union in our parks," the governor stated.
The governor further directed that anyone found contravening the order should be arrested for possible prosecution for disturbance of public peace. He also ordered the immediate establishment of a Rapid Response Squad comprising all security agencies in the state to ensure strict compliance with the directive. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Armed Forces, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Correctional Service, NDLEA, NAPTIP, and Amotekun Corps, among others. Security commanders present at the meeting assured the governor of their commitment to implementing the order.
The ban came amid a factional crisis that has engulfed the union since Monday, disrupting business activities and heightening insecurity across the state. The suspension of NURTW activities followed an earlier announcement by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, which appointed caretaker management committees for transport unions as part of measures aimed at restoring order. The state government's directive effectively suspends the collection of levies across all motor parks in the state and authorises security agencies to arrest anyone presenting themselves as officials or executives of the union in defiance of the order.
