A suspected drug-related incident in Ogun State has claimed the lives of two students, with two others hospitalised after they allegedly inhaled a substance believed to be "laughing gas" in the Oke-Ola Phase II area of Isara-Remo. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, has sent shockwaves through the community and raised fresh concerns over the rising abuse of nitrous oxide among young people in Nigeria.
According to a local resident who spoke on condition of anonymity, four students were involved in the incident: two died at the scene, while two others were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. The victims are believed to be students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, although the police have yet to officially confirm their institutional affiliation.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, told journalists that the command is investigating a suspected drug-related case and that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a morgue for autopsy. "The survivors are currently receiving medical treatment," Babaseyi said, adding that the police are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. He warned against the dangers of drug abuse but noted that investigators have not yet verified whether the victims were indeed students of the polytechnic.
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas," is a colourless gas that is sometimes used recreationally for its euphoric effects. However, inhalation of the substance can lead to oxygen deprivation, loss of blood pressure, fainting, and even death, particularly when used in enclosed spaces or in large quantities. The incident has reignited calls for stricter regulation of the substance, which is legally available for medical and industrial purposes but is increasingly being misused by young people.
Repeated calls to the Public Relations Officer of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Folorunso Adedayo, seeking official comment went unanswered at the time of filing this report. The Ogun State Police Command has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. As investigations continue, the community of Isara-Remo and the wider student body of Gateway ICT Polytechnic are left to mourn the loss of two young lives, while the two survivors fight for their recovery.
