A devastating attack by suspected bandits on farming communities in the Sauna/Ruwan Gora area of Talata Mafara Local Government Area, Zamfara State, has left at least 23 farmers dead and more than 50 people hospitalised, with the assault occurring in a region close to the hometown of Nigeria's Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle. The attackers, who arrived on motorcycles, initially rode through the community at about 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, without causing any harm, with residents counting the number of motorcycles. However, the gunmen later returned and opened fire on farmers working on their farmlands, chasing and killing those who attempted to escape, according to a resident who spoke to Daily Trust.
The attack, which lasted for about three hours, according to another resident, Bello Aliyu, who spoke to Reuters, resulted in the deaths of at least 23 farmers, with some sources suggesting the death toll could be as high as 25. The assailants also rustled an unspecified number of livestock, leaving several people wounded, many of them women and children, who are currently receiving treatment. A councillor representing the Sauna district, Nasiru Lauwali, told AFP that the bandits killed 21 people when they opened fire at around 3:00 p.m. (1400 GMT). The victims were attacked while working on their farms, with many shot as they fled. The remains of the 23 victims were later buried in a mass burial at the palace of the District Head of Sauna on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
The attack occurred in an area that is part of the broader Zamfara North Senatorial District, which includes Maradun Local Government Area, the hometown of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle. While Talata Mafara is a separate Local Government Area, the proximity of the massacre to the minister's home constituency has raised questions about the effectiveness of the government's security strategy in the region. The bandits reportedly travelled nearly 50 kilometres (31 miles) along the Mayanchi-Anka highway, a key trade route, before reaching Sauna without encountering security forces, according to Reuters. The Zamfara State Police Command, through the Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident, stating that the Divisional Police Officer in Talata Mafara had reported the killing of 23 farmers. Abubakar said the command had deployed additional personnel to the area and was working to track down the attackers.
Amnesty International has strongly condemned the killing, describing the attack as further evidence that the security measures adopted to tackle insecurity in the state are ineffective. The human rights organisation said the massacre highlights the persistent failure of authorities to protect civilians in Zamfara, where armed gangs, locally known as bandits, frequently raid villages, kidnap residents for ransom, and steal livestock. The attack has drawn widespread condemnation and renewed calls for the Federal Government to take decisive action to end the cycle of violence in the North-West, where communities have been subjected to relentless attacks despite ongoing military operations. Community leaders have called for increased security presence in rural areas to protect farmers during the planting and harvest seasons, warning that continued killings and kidnappings of farmers could worsen food insecurity in Zamfara and other parts of the country. As of the time of filing this report, the Zamfara State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident or confirm the casualty figure, while efforts to reach the Chairman of Talata Mafara Local Government Area were unsuccessful.
