The Qua'an-Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State has banned all unauthorised settlements by herders and the grazing of cattle on farmlands across the council, in a decisive move aimed at addressing the recurring farmer-herder clashes and improving security in the area. The decision was announced on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, following a security council meeting convened by the Executive Chairman of the area, Hon. Christopher L. Manship, according to a statement issued by the Information Officer of the council, Matthias Dading.
In his remarks, Manship made it clear that anyone caught violating the order would face the full wrath of the law, stressing that the ban was not merely a directive but a necessary measure to protect the lives and livelihoods of farmers in the area. "Any herders who violate this order will be dealt with in accordance with the law," the chairman said, urging residents to cooperate with security agencies to ensure the success of the initiative. Qua'an-Pan, like many parts of Plateau State, has experienced pockets of farmer-herder violence in recent years, often sparked by disputes over access to land, grazing routes and water sources. The council said the decision was taken in consultation with community leaders and security stakeholders and is part of broader efforts to restore public confidence and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The council also called on all community leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups and security agencies to work together in implementing the ban and maintaining peace. The decision comes just days after the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, visited Plateau State to assess the security situation and meet with stakeholders, where he stressed the need for communities to embrace dialogue and support security agencies. The Plateau State Government has also been actively engaging with herders and farmers to promote coexistence and address the root causes of the conflict. However, the Qua'an-Pan LGA's decision represents a more direct approach to regulating herder activities within its jurisdiction, and its success will depend on effective enforcement and the cooperation of all stakeholders.
