Barely three weeks after its inauguration, a section of the newly constructed LAMECO Flyover in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, has sustained significant damage following prolonged heavy rainfall, raising public concerns over infrastructure quality, road safety, and the protection of public assets.
The 672-metre flyover, commissioned by Osun State Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke on July 1, 2026, developed a noticeable depression on one lane after an overnight downpour that lasted for nearly eight hours between Thursday and Friday. The damaged portion showed visible cracks and a sunken asphalt surface, forcing motorists to slow down while navigating the affected section before authorities restricted access to the bridge.
Residents who gathered around the bridge expressed concern over the safety of the structure, warning that continued use without immediate intervention could expose commuters to unnecessary risks. Many motorists were forced to seek alternative routes as traffic movement within parts of Osogbo was disrupted by the incident.
Security personnel from the Osun Amotekun Corps were deployed to the scene, where they cordoned off the affected section to prevent vehicles and pedestrians from accessing the damaged area while technical assessments were carried out. The restriction was introduced as a precautionary measure pending a detailed evaluation of the extent of the damage.
The incident has attracted widespread public attention because the bridge was officially opened to traffic less than one month earlier as one of the flagship projects under Governor Adeleke's infrastructure renewal programme. The LAMECO Flyover was presented as a strategic intervention aimed at easing traffic congestion in Osogbo while improving connectivity and supporting economic activities within the state capital.
At the commissioning ceremony, Governor Adeleke described the flyover as part of a broader infrastructure agenda that included roads, bridges, healthcare, education and water projects across Osun State. He also stated that the project reflected his administration's commitment to transparency, due process and the use of local contractors capable of delivering quality infrastructure without placing an excessive financial burden on future generations.
The governor had further urged residents to protect public infrastructure from vandalism and warned against activities such as street trading and the destruction of government facilities around the flyover and its underpass. According to the state government, safeguarding public investments remains a shared responsibility between government institutions and the public.
Following Friday's incident, political reactions quickly emerged. The Accord Party in Osun rejected suggestions that the damage resulted from construction defects, alleging instead that the incident could be linked to deliberate sabotage targeting government projects ahead of the state's forthcoming governorship election.
In a statement issued by its Osun State Chairman, Victor Akande, the party claimed it had received what it described as credible reports indicating a pattern of vandalism directed at public infrastructure executed by the Adeleke administration. The party argued that such actions were allegedly intended to undermine public confidence in the government's development achievements.
Accord further alleged that political opponents, particularly members of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), were attempting to discredit the administration by damaging completed projects. The party called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, identify anyone found responsible for criminal acts if sabotage is established, and ensure that the damaged section of the flyover is repaired without delay.
The APC, however, rejected suggestions of sabotage and instead questioned the quality of the project. Party officials argued that concerns had previously been raised regarding construction standards and maintained that the incident reinforced public scrutiny over the execution of major infrastructure projects within the state.
As public debate intensified, engineering experts and residents alike called for an independent technical assessment to determine whether the damage resulted from unusually heavy rainfall, drainage failures, construction deficiencies or other factors. At the time of reporting, no official engineering report had been released identifying the precise cause of the road surface failure.
Infrastructure specialists note that prolonged rainfall can expose weaknesses in pavement layers, drainage systems and foundation stability, making comprehensive technical investigations essential before conclusions are reached. They also emphasise that visible damage to the asphalt surface does not automatically indicate failure of the bridge's structural components, as detailed engineering inspections are required to establish the condition of the underlying structure.
The development has renewed discussion about infrastructure maintenance and quality assurance across Nigeria, particularly as governments continue to invest heavily in road and bridge construction to address urban growth and traffic congestion. Citizens have increasingly called for rigorous project supervision, regular inspections and prompt maintenance to protect public investments and ensure the long-term durability of critical transport infrastructure.
The LAMECO Flyover forms part of a series of major projects undertaken by the Adeleke administration since assuming office, with the governor previously announcing that more than 300 kilometres of intra-city roads had been completed across Osun State alongside several ongoing bridge and dual carriageway projects.
As authorities continue to assess the damaged section, commuters and residents are awaiting the outcome of technical investigations and the commencement of repair works. The incident is expected to remain under close public scrutiny as officials work to restore normal traffic flow while addressing questions surrounding the durability, maintenance and security of one of Osun State's most prominent infrastructure projects.
