NABLUS, WEST BANK — July 25, 2026 — Israel has launched a major military operation across parts of the occupied West Bank following a deadly confrontation near the Palestinian village of Tal, southwest of Nablus, that left four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers dead, triggering renewed fears of a wider escalation in the region.
The Israeli military said the operation was aimed at targeting what it described as militant activity in the area, announcing increased troop deployments, additional arrests and security restrictions around Nablus and neighbouring communities. The move came after one of the deadliest incidents in the West Bank in recent months, involving Palestinian residents, Israeli settlers and Israeli security forces.
The violence occurred on Friday near Tal, a Palestinian village located close to the Israeli settlement of Havat Gilad. According to Palestinian officials and local residents, the confrontation began when a group of armed Israeli settlers entered the village area and attempted to approach Palestinian homes, leading residents to confront them. Palestinian sources said gunfire broke out during the confrontation, resulting in multiple casualties.
Israeli military officials gave a different account of the incident, saying Israeli civilians had been hiking in the area when they came under attack. The army said a Palestinian took a weapon and fired at Israelis during the confrontation, before being killed. Israeli authorities said the subsequent military response was necessary to prevent further attacks and restore security.
The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that four Palestinians were killed during the clashes, while the Israeli military later confirmed that two soldiers died during operational activity near Tal. Several others were injured as the violence spread beyond the initial confrontation.
Following the deaths, Israeli forces surrounded areas around Nablus and Tal, established checkpoints and began what officials described as a broader counterterrorism operation. The military announced that more arrests were expected as security forces continued searching for individuals suspected of involvement in attacks against Israelis.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded by ordering what he called a firm security response. Netanyahu said Israeli forces would take measures including increased military presence, weapons seizures, restrictions on movement and action against communities accused by Israel of supporting attacks.
Netanyahu also backed moves to accelerate the legal recognition of some Israeli agricultural outposts and expand settlement activity in the West Bank. The issue remains highly controversial internationally, as most countries consider Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank illegal under international law, while Israel disputes that position.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned the killings and called for international action to stop what it described as escalating violence in the occupied territory.
The incident has also intensified debate inside Israel, particularly among members of the country’s far-right political bloc. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for a tougher response against Palestinian communities, while critics warned that expanding military operations and settlement policies could increase tensions and fuel further violence.
The United Nations has repeatedly expressed concern over rising violence in the West Bank, particularly attacks involving Israeli settlers. International organisations have documented an increase in confrontations, injuries and displacement among Palestinian communities since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023.
The West Bank has remained a major flashpoint throughout the wider Israel-Palestinian conflict. Tensions increased significantly after Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, followed by Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Since then, Israeli raids, Palestinian militant attacks and settler-related violence have continued to increase across the territory.
Nablus, one of the largest Palestinian cities in the northern West Bank, has frequently witnessed confrontations between Israeli forces, settlers and Palestinian armed groups. The area surrounding the city contains several Israeli settlements and has become a centre of repeated security operations.
The latest escalation has raised concerns among regional leaders that continued violence could destabilise an already fragile security environment. Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi warned that actions threatening the status quo in the region could push the area towards a broader crisis.
Human rights groups and international observers have called on both Israeli and Palestinian authorities to prevent further civilian casualties and ensure accountability for violations. They have urged restraint, warning that cycles of retaliation risk creating deeper instability and making future peace efforts more difficult.
As Israeli forces continue operations around Nablus and surrounding villages, residents on both sides remain concerned about possible further clashes. The deaths of six people in the Tal confrontation have once again highlighted the fragile security situation in the West Bank and the growing challenge of preventing further escalation.
The Israeli military has not announced an end date for the operation, while Palestinian officials continue to demand an international response to what they describe as worsening conditions across the occupied territory. The situation remains closely monitored as security forces carry out further investigations and operations.
