The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a member of the state's Neighbourhood Watch, formerly known as Ebubeagu, by suspected gunmen in Abakaliki, the state capital. The victim has been identified as Mr Chidiebere Okpara, who was attacked while on duty at Ugwuchara in Abakaliki Local Government Area at about 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday, July 25, 2026, stating that the command had commenced an investigation and that no arrest had been made at the time of the report.

According to an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity, Okpara was ambushed by armed assailants while on patrol. The attackers repeatedly shot at the operative, but when the gunshots failed to immediately bring him down, they allegedly overpowered him and inflicted fatal machete cuts before fleeing the scene. "We do not know the motive behind the attack. We are calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice," the eyewitness said.

The police spokesperson pledged the command's commitment to identifying and apprehending those responsible for the attack. "Investigation has begun into the matter, and we are determined to fish out the perpetrators of the crime. We are committed to safeguarding the lives and property of the people," Ukandu stated. The killing has raised concerns over the safety of security operatives in the state, as the Neighbourhood Watch has been a key component of the state's grassroots security architecture. The Ebonyi State Government has previously described neighbourhood watch operatives as the backbone of grassroots security, noting that they operate round-the-clock and report incidents through a centralised command structure. As investigations continue, the police have urged residents to remain vigilant and provide useful information that could aid in the apprehension of the perpetrators.
