The leadership of Bomadi Urban Community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State has moved to reassure traders and residents, particularly members of the Igbo business community, following a series of burglaries that have targeted shops in the Bomadi-Overside business district. The Chairman of the community, Mr. Famous Ebiare, gave the assurance amid growing concerns over repeated thefts affecting businesses in the riverine commercial hub, many of them owned by Igbo traders. According to the Chairman, the community plans to escalate the matter to the Bomadi Local Government Security Council and propose the establishment of vigilante posts to strengthen security and curb criminal activities.
The assurance comes on the heels of outcries from traders who have suffered significant losses. One trader recounted how his elder brother's phone and accessories shop was burgled for the third time, with goods worth millions of naira carted away. According to him, the thieves stole phones, power banks, and other accessories while the owner was away on a business trip. He noted that the incident had been reported to the Bomadi Police Station, but similar cases persist in the community. The traders, including Igbo business owners operating at the popular Bomadi-Overside commercial centre, lamented that repeated attacks had worsened their challenges amid the prevailing economic difficulties in the country.
In response, the leadership of the Esenaebe community introduced punitive measures, including a N200,000 fine for anyone caught committing theft or identified through credible whistleblowers. The community chairman, Chief Romeo Bozimo, expressed exasperation over the persistent reports of burglaries and thefts. He stated that property owners would be allowed to pursue legal means to recover their stolen items. However, a clarification was issued by Mr. Famous Ebiare, who noted that the community is officially known as Bomadi-Overside and disputed references to it as "Esenaebe" in previous reports. He maintained that Mr. Wareka-emi Osuobeni is the duly elected chairman of Bomadi-Overside, adding that there is no parallel leadership in the community. According to him, accurate identification of the community and its leadership is important to avoid misinformation.
Chief Romeo Bozimo also appealed to the Bomadi Local Government Council to strengthen security collaboration with community leaders, noting that they had not been adequately involved in security meetings within the council area. He called for the deployment of vigilantes, stating, "We need vigilantes here, as we have been overlooked in security-related issues." The Bomadi-Overside area remains a strategic commercial hub that serves traders from several riverine communities, making it imperative to safeguard lives, businesses and property. Mr. Famous Ebiare expressed sympathy for the victims and pledged decisive action, stating that he would present the matter at the Local Government Security Council meeting and propose the establishment of vigilante posts within the community to improve security.
