Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has expressed deep grief over the recent spate of deaths in the state, lamenting the loss of two former Permanent Secretaries and the All Progressives Congress Women Leader, describing the deaths as a huge loss to their families, communities and the state at large. In a statement signed by his Director-General of Press and Media Affairs, Mamman Mohammed, on Sunday, July 26, 2026, the governor called on citizens to offer prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased and to accept the will of Almighty Allah.
Governor Buni acknowledged the contributions of the deceased to the development of Yobe State, noting that the state had lost one too many in recent times. He listed the deceased as the late Emir of Ngazargamu, Dr. Bukar Aji; former Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Ligali Lawan Ma'aji; Alhaji Yakubu Dokshi; Hajiya Mairiga Umar, the APC Women Leader Yobe South; Alhaji Kafchi Shettima; and several others. He specifically acknowledged the service of the two former Permanent Secretaries and Hajiya Mairiga Umar, saying their dedication to public service and community mobilisation will be sorely missed.
"As faithful, we all know death is a necessary end, it will always come at the prescribed time as ordained by Allah (SWT)," Governor Buni said. "Sadly, however, we have lost one too many in recent times. From the late Emir of Ngazargamu to the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Bukar Aji, former Permanent Secretary, Alh. Ligali Ma'aji, Alh. Yakubu Dokshi, Hajiya Mairiga Umar, Alh. Kafchi Shettima and some others," he stated. Governor Buni noted that the deceased persons, in their individual capacities, contributed greatly to the development of Yobe State.
While consoling the bereaved families and the people of the state, the governor urged Muslims to accept the will of Almighty Allah and pray for the departed. "As Muslims, we accept the will of Almighty Allah and pray for the repose of their souls. May Almighty Allah grant them Aljannah Firdaus, and to their families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss," he prayed. "It is indeed a trying moment for us but we firmly believe that it is the will of Almighty Allah. May Allah forgive their shortcomings and bless their souls with Aljannah Firdaus," he further prayed.
Governor Buni urged the people of Yobe to remain steadfast in faith, offer prayers for the repose of the deceased, and stand in solidarity with the bereaved families during their time of grief. He said the deceased made significant contributions to the growth and development of Yobe State through their service and dedication to the people, adding that their passing represents a great loss not only to their families and communities but also to the entire state, and that their legacies would continue to inspire future generations. The governor's message of condolence comes amid a wave of mourning across the state, as residents and political leaders come to terms with the loss of several prominent citizens within a short period.
