Students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, have issued a 72-hour ultimatum to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa over demands related to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), unpaid bursaries, hostel fees, and other welfare concerns. The ultimatum, issued by the Students' Union Government and signed by the SUG President, Comrade Daniel Abiodun, the Senate President, and other executive officers, was made public on Monday, July 27, 2026. The students accused the university management and the government of abdicating their responsibilities, warning that they would be forced to occupy the school premises and "shut down the entire institution" if their demands are not met within the stipulated timeframe.
The students' grievances centre on the ongoing ASUU strike, which they said has kept them away from academic activities for over 10 weeks. The strike is rooted in a dispute over the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances to ASUU members, and students have been unable to resume academic activities, as lecturers have withdrawn services. The students said the continued closure of the university and the government's alleged failure to prioritise the welfare of students and lecturers had left them frustrated and uncertain about their academic future.
The students' demands include the immediate release of funds to resolve the ASUU strike and allow academic activities to resume. They also demanded the immediate refund of the ₦500,000 backlog of bursary arrears and a reduction in hostel fees, which they described as "incessant and burdensome." They further demanded the immediate reopening of all hostels on campus, as many students have been unable to afford private accommodations due to the rising cost of living. The students' union also called for the completion of abandoned projects on campus and the improvement of the institution's infrastructure.
The ultimatum comes after the university management had earlier disclosed that the school would reopen on Monday, July 27, 2026, following the suspension of the four-week warning strike by ASUU. However, students said they were shocked to find that the strike had not been called off and that the institution remained closed. The students claimed that the management and the government had misled them into believing that the strike was over. As of the time of filing this report, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa's Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, had not responded to calls and messages seeking comments on the students' ultimatum. The ultimatum follows a similar protest by AAUA students in March 2026, which led to the temporary closure of the university after students blocked the main road and demanded the reversal of the hike in tuition and hostel fees.
