Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: FG Begins Two-Week Kara Bridge Repair Tuesday, Partial Traffic Disruptions Expected

The Lagos State Government has advised motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to expect partial traffic disruptions for two weeks starting Tuesday, July 28, as the Federal Ministry of Works begins the replacement of the expansion joint at Kara Bridge . The repair work on the outbound Lagos carriageway of the bridge will be supervised by the Federal Ministry of Works and executed by CBC Global Civil & Construction Company .

According to a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the project is scheduled to run for two weeks from July 28 . During this period, temporary traffic management measures, including lane restrictions and controlled diversions where necessary, will be implemented to ensure the safety of both motorists and construction personnel . The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency has also advised motorists to expect delays, particularly during peak traffic periods, and to plan their journeys accordingly .

The repairs come after a series of fatal accidents on the Kara Bridge section of the expressway. On Friday, July 24, multiple crashes on the bridge caused severe gridlock, leaving motorists stranded and resulting in one death and two injuries . The Federal Ministry of Works had earlier commenced replacement of the expansion joints on the bridge in March, but the works were suspended following persistent gridlock that lasted several days .

TRACE has said it will work with the Federal Ministry of Works, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, and other stakeholders to deploy adequate personnel to manage traffic and minimise inconvenience during the repair works . The agency also appealed to motorists for patience and cooperation, noting that the rehabilitation was necessary to improve the safety and durability of the bridge infrastructure .

Motorists are advised to obey traffic signs, comply with instructions from traffic management and law enforcement officers, maintain safe following distances, and avoid driving against traffic . The Lagos State Government has urged road users to exercise patience and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed along the corridor .
