Katsina State has recorded one of its most significant security victories in recent months after security forces successfully repelled a large-scale bandit attack on Guga Village in Bakori Local Government Area, killing more than 40 armed bandits and reportedly eliminating several senior commanders of the criminal network.
According to the Katsina State Government, the attack occurred at about 5:40 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026, when more than 200 heavily armed bandits stormed Guga Village in what authorities described as a coordinated reprisal attack. The attackers were allegedly led by notorious bandit kingpin Idi Abasu Aiki and reinforced by members of the Ado Aleru criminal group operating from neighboring Zamfara State.
Government officials disclosed that intelligence gathered before the attack revealed that the armed group intended to overpower the local Hunters and Community Watch Corps stationed in the area before launching wider assaults on Bakori town and nearby communities. Authorities said the planned offensive was aimed at dismantling the community-based security network that has increasingly frustrated the operations of criminal gangs across the area.
However, security agencies, acting on intelligence reports, quickly mobilized personnel and coordinated a counteroffensive that resulted in a fierce gun battle. The attackers were eventually forced to retreat after suffering heavy casualties during the confrontation.
The Katsina State Government stated that more than 40 bandits were neutralized during the operation. Follow-up intelligence assessments also indicated that about eight senior commanders within the criminal network were killed. Officials further disclosed that the group's alleged leader, Idi Abasu Aiki, sustained life-threatening gunshot injuries during the exchange of fire, although there has been no independent confirmation of his condition.
Authorities described the outcome as a major blow to organized banditry in the state, noting that the operation significantly weakened one of the most active criminal networks operating across parts of Katsina and neighboring Zamfara State.
The government explained that the latest attack was linked to an earlier security operation conducted on July 7, 2026, at Dawan Laila Village in Bakori Local Government Area. During that earlier operation, members of the Hunters and Community Watch Corps reportedly inflicted substantial losses on the same criminal network, disrupting its activities in the area.
Officials believe the assault on Guga Village was intended as retaliation for those earlier losses and an attempt by the bandits to regain influence by dismantling the local security architecture established by the state government in collaboration with community security volunteers.
Following the latest confrontation, security personnel launched clearance operations across the affected area to recover weapons, ammunition, motorcycles, and other items reportedly abandoned by the fleeing bandits. Surveillance and intelligence gathering have also been intensified to ensure that fleeing members of the criminal group do not regroup or launch fresh attacks.
Despite the operational success, the Katsina State Government confirmed that four members of the Hunters' team lost their lives during the incident. According to officials, the volunteers were fatally shot after they were caught outside the main frontline while attending to personal shopping activities at the time of the attack.
The government paid tribute to the fallen personnel, describing them as courageous patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending their communities against criminal elements. Authorities extended condolences to their families and pledged continued support for those affected by the incident.
Officials further announced that normalcy has since been restored in Guga Village and surrounding communities, with residents gradually returning to their daily activities under increased security presence.
The government reiterated its commitment to strengthening collaboration between conventional security agencies and community-based security outfits, including the Hunters and Community Watch Corps, describing the partnership as an important component of efforts to combat banditry across Katsina State.
Bakori Local Government Area has witnessed repeated attacks by armed groups in recent years because of its proximity to forests and criminal hideouts that extend into neighboring Zamfara State. Security agencies have continued to conduct intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling these networks and preventing attacks on rural communities.
The latest operation represents another chapter in the state's broader campaign against armed banditry, as authorities continue to intensify surveillance, improve intelligence gathering, and expand coordinated security operations across vulnerable areas.
The Katsina State Government maintained that it remains determined to protect lives and property and vowed to sustain aggressive operations against criminal groups threatening peace and stability across the state.
