Operatives of the Kano State Police Command have rescued 10 passengers who were abducted along the Kaduna-Abuja highway following a swift response to a distress call, foiling what could have been a mass kidnapping operation by suspected bandits. The rescue operation was carried out on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, after the command's Special Constabulary received credible information that armed men had intercepted a commercial bus travelling from Kano to Lagos and taken the passengers hostage at Gidan Kurmi, near Tafa-Suleja Road.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, operatives immediately mobilised to the scene and engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle. The superior tactical response of the police team forced the assailants to abandon the victims and flee into the surrounding bush, leaving behind weapons, communication gadgets and other items. The operatives successfully rescued all 10 passengers unharmed.
During the rescue operation, the police recovered several items suspected to have been abandoned by the fleeing bandits, including three motorcycles, mobile phones, cash, charms, and a live cartridge. The victims have since been reunited with their families after receiving medical attention and counselling. The Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo Garba, commended the officers for their bravery and professionalism, and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to aid in crime prevention.
The rescue comes amid a broader crackdown on banditry and kidnapping across the North-West and North-Central regions, where highway abductions have become a growing threat to travellers. The Kano State Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property, and has called on motorists to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. As of the time of filing this report, efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing bandits and apprehend them.
