The Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned a man before a Borno State High Court over allegations of criminal misappropriation involving N19 million, in a case that highlights the growing challenge of land fraud in Nigeria's North-East region. The defendant, Sadi Babale, was brought before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri on Monday, July 27, 2026, on a one-count charge bordering on criminal misappropriation of funds belonging to a petitioner.
According to the charge sheet, the alleged offence occurred sometimes in September 2024 at Maiduguri, Borno State. The defendant was accused of dishonestly misappropriating the total sum of N19,000,000.00 (Nineteen Million Naira) belonging to one Alhaji Tijjani Mohammed. The charge reads: "That you, Sadi Babale, sometimes in September, 2024 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this honourable court did dishonestly misappropriate the total sum of N19,000,000.00 (Nineteen Million Naira) money belonging to one Alhaji Tijjani Mohammed and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 296 and punishable under section 297 of the Penal Code Laws of Borno State."
When the charge was read to him, the defendant pleaded "not guilty," setting the stage for a full trial. Counsel to the prosecution, Mukhtar Ali Ahmed, prayed for a trial date and urged the court to remand the defendant in a Correctional facility pending the conclusion of the case. In response, counsel to the defendant, J. Yakubu, applied to move a motion for the bail of the defendant, seeking his release from custody while the trial proceeds.
Justice Kumaliya, after hearing both parties, adjourned the matter till Tuesday, July 28, 2026, for the hearing of the bail application. The judge ordered the remand of the defendant at the Maiduguri Maximum Correctional Facility pending the determination of the bail application. The swift adjournment indicates the court's intention to expedite the hearing, a positive development in a judicial system often criticised for slow case processing.
According to investigations by the EFCC, the defendant's journey to the Correctional facility began when the sum of N19,000,000 was paid to him by the petitioner for the purchase of four plots of land. It was later discovered that the land documents presented to the petitioner were not genuine, and the defendant allegedly converted the money for his own personal use. The case highlights the prevalence of land fraud in Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State, where the demand for property has increased in the wake of post-insurgency reconstruction efforts and returning residents seeking to rebuild their lives.
The EFCC's Maiduguri Zonal Directorate has been active in prosecuting financial crimes in the region, with a focus on corruption, fraud, and misappropriation of public funds. The commission has in recent years intensified its operations in the North-East, where the Boko Haram insurgency and its aftermath have created opportunities for financial malfeasance. The arraignment of Babale is part of the commission's broader efforts to ensure that those who commit financial crimes, regardless of their status, are brought to justice and that citizens can have confidence in the integrity of commercial transactions.
The allegations in this case are particularly significant given the amount involved and the context in which the offence occurred. Land transactions in Maiduguri and other parts of Borno have become increasingly complex, with some individuals taking advantage of the high demand to perpetrate fraud. The EFCC's intervention in this case sends a clear signal that such fraudulent activities will not be tolerated and that perpetrators will face the full weight of the law. For now, Babale remains in custody at the Maiduguri Maximum Correctional Facility, with his fate to be decided in the coming weeks.
