Africa's wealthiest individual, Aliko Dangote, has secured his family's unanimous backing to donate one-third of his estimated $35.1 billion fortune to charity, a landmark decision his daughter says formalises the billionaire's commitment to ensuring that philanthropy outlasts his lifetime. Halima Dangote, a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation and executive director at Dangote Industries, disclosed the plan in an interview with Bloomberg published on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. She revealed that the industrialist had asked her, her two sisters and his mother to sign a legal will formalising the commitment, which dedicates 33 per cent of his estate to humanity. Based on his current net worth, the donation would amount to approximately $11.7 billion, making it one of the largest philanthropic pledges ever made by an African billionaire.
Halima explained that the arrangement follows Islamic inheritance principles, known in Sharia as the rule allowing up to one-third of an estate to be bequeathed to non-heirs. "He actually donated 25 per cent to the foundation. If you look at it, it is what we call in Sharia Code in Islam; it means he has donated 33 per cent of his whole inheritance to his foundation," she said. She emphasised that the decision was designed to guarantee the sustainability of the foundation's projects across generations. "That is how important it is to him because philanthropy needs to be in existence generation after generation. So giving back is part and parcel of what we do. We believe we're here, that our business is successful because of the giving back and because of the philanthropic aspect," she stated.
The planned donation builds on Dangote's longstanding charitable activities through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, which was established in 1994. Halima disclosed that the foundation received an endowment of $1.25 billion approximately a decade ago and has since attracted another $700 million in funding. Roughly 70 per cent of the foundation's spending is committed to projects in Nigeria, while 20 per cent supports initiatives across Africa, with the remaining funds allocated to programmes elsewhere in the world. The foundation focuses on health, education, nutrition and humanitarian assistance, and has collaborated with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and state governments in northern Nigeria on initiatives that contributed to the eradication of wild poliovirus in Africa.
The commitment comes at a time when Dangote's net worth has reached record highs, driven largely by the operational expansion of the $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos, alongside strong performances from Dangote Cement and his agricultural holdings. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Dangote's fortune has grown by over $6.5 billion in 2026 alone, positioning him among the top 65 richest individuals globally. His wealth is currently estimated at $35.1 billion, though some reports have placed the figure at $36.5 billion. Regardless of the exact calculation, one-third of his fortune represents a monumental philanthropic commitment—between $11.6 billion and $12.2 billion—that will significantly expand the foundation's capacity to address critical development gaps across Sub-Saharan Africa.
The decision places philanthropy at the centre of Dangote's succession strategy, reflecting a broader trend among African business dynasties toward structured, institutional philanthropy designed to drive sustainable socioeconomic impact across generations. Wealth management experts note that such consensus prevents post-generational fragmentation and sets a precedent for ultra-high-net-worth families operating across emerging markets. By formalising the pledge, the family mirrors global philanthropic benchmarks while tailoring its execution to address the acute infrastructure, health and educational challenges facing African economies.
Dangote's planned charitable giving builds on a philanthropy record spanning more than three decades. In March 2025, TIME magazine named him among the world's most influential philanthropists in its inaugural TIME100 Philanthropy list, honouring him in the "Titans" category alongside figures including Michael Bloomberg, Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffett and Melinda French Gates. The foundation reportedly spends more than N50 billion annually on humanitarian programmes across Africa.
The announcement comes at a time when wealth inequality remains a major issue across the continent. Oxfam reported in 2025 that the average income of Africa's richest 1 per cent had grown five times faster than that of the bottom 50 per cent since 2020. However, the planned 33 per cent allocation remains below the 50 per cent minimum generally associated with the Giving Pledge, a global initiative through which wealthy individuals commit to giving the majority of their wealth to philanthropy. Only a small number of African billionaires have joined the Giving Pledge, including South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe and his wife Precious, Zimbabwean couple Strive and Tsitsi Masiyiwa, and Tanzanian billionaire Mohammed Dewji.
While major wealth transfers in family-led conglomerates often present internal succession challenges, the unified stance among Dangote's heirs reflects a deliberate strategy to institutionalise family giving. Halima confirmed that the family fully supports dedicating a major share of the fortune to charitable initiatives across the continent. "He sort of put all the structure in place whereby we focus a lot on health and education," she said, noting that the billionaire had already created a framework to ensure that his philanthropic activities continue beyond his lifetime. For Dangote, whose business empire spans cement, sugar, flour, salt and refining, the decision to formalise the donation through a legally binding will underscores his determination to ensure that his philanthropic impact outlasts his lifetime.
