The Delta State Police Command has exhumed the body of 20-year-old nursing student Favour Agbro to conduct a post-mortem examination as part of an ongoing investigation into her tragic death, following allegations that she was raped by a popular social media content creator before taking her own life. The exhumation took place on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at her gravesite in Agbaro, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, where she had been buried after her death on July 14, 2026.
Favour Agbro, a nursing student from Delta State, died by suicide after alleging that she was sexually assaulted by Ifeanyi Ogbonna, a 44-year-old social media content creator popularly known as "Odogwu of Asaba". According to reports, Ogbonna allegedly lured Favour to a hotel in Asaba, the Delta State capital, under the pretext of offering her financial assistance and teaching her how to monetise her social media accounts. Instead, she alleged that he raped her and afterwards boasted about taking her virginity.
In a viral video recorded before her death, a distraught Favour recounted the alleged assault, stating that the suspect covered her mouth, raped her, and proudly declared that he had taken a woman's virginity for the first time. The video, which circulated widely on social media, sparked outrage and demands for justice. Shortly after making the allegations, Favour reportedly ingested a poisonous substance and died.
The Delta State Police Command arrested Ifeanyi Ogbonna on Wednesday, July 16, 2026, following the allegations. He remains in police custody as the investigation continues. The Police Public Relations Officer for the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest and stated that the suspect would be charged to court.
The decision to exhume Favour's body for an autopsy was disclosed by human rights activist Israel Joe, who has been closely monitoring the case and advocating for justice. Joe, who visited the burial site on the morning of July 28 to monitor preparations, confirmed that the post-mortem examination was conducted by an investigative team alongside qualified pathologists. Representatives of all parties involved, including the legal team representing Odogwu Asaba, were present during the procedure.
The exhumation was an emotional ordeal for the grieving family. In a poignant moment before the body was removed, Favour's twin sister, Faith, requested permission to place a loaf of bread and a tin of sardines inside the grave. According to Israel Joe, the twin sister explained that her late sister had appeared to her in a dream complaining of hunger. The family's request was granted amid wailing, agony, sorrow and tears. The body was then exhumed for the autopsy and was scheduled to be reinterred immediately after the forensic examination was completed.
The outcome of the autopsy is expected to form a crucial part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Favour Agbro's death. Investigators are combining the forensic findings with other medical, testimonial and digital evidence, including the viral video recorded by Favour before her death and purported WhatsApp exchanges in which the suspect allegedly dismissed her grievances as blackmail. The case has attracted widespread public attention and sparked a growing demand for justice across Nigeria. As of the time of this report, the official autopsy report had not been released, and the Delta State Police Command has continued its investigation. Israel Joe, however, has vowed to follow up until justice is manifestly seen to have been done.
The tragic death of Favour Agbro has once again brought the issue of sexual violence and its devastating consequences into sharp focus.
