Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu has demanded justice for a 28-year-old widow, identified as Tosin, who is allegedly facing severe harassment, intimidation, and physical assault from her late husband's relatives barely a week after his passing. The activist, known for championing the cause of vulnerable Nigerians, took to social media on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, to expose what he described as a "heartless" campaign of oppression against a grieving mother of two, who is now fighting for her dignity, shelter, and the inheritance of her young sons.
According to Gwamnishu's detailed social media statement, Tosin's legally married husband passed away on July 20, 2026, after battling an illness. However, instead of being allowed to grieve in peace, the young widow's world was "turned upside down" by her in-laws within eight days of the demise. The activist alleged that the relatives—including her father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and his wife—forcefully vacated their own residence and moved into the deceased's home, located at No 8 Jumofak Igbo Oluwo Estate, Koya Adeniran, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
Once inside, the in-laws allegedly ordered Tosin to pack all her personal belongings and those of her two young sons into a single room, confining the young family to a tiny space within the property they once shared with her late husband. The activist further claimed that some of the deceased's properties had already been shared among the relatives, while plans were underway to sell his car. In a harrowing account, a video circulating online captured a heated confrontation between Tosin and her father-in-law, where the distressed widow repeatedly cried in Yoruba, "Ẹ̀ ń ní mí lára! Ẹ̀ ń ní mí lára!" meaning, "You all are stressing me! You all are oppressing me!".
Speaking in English while fighting back tears, Tosin alleged that she was physically assaulted by the relatives. "They were not supposed to do anything to me! They started beating me. They are not even supposed to do anything to me, they are not supposed to touch me. I am weak, I am hungry, I am tired. That was how everything happened, he started beating me, dragging my phone, and threw me on the floor. What if I hit my head on the floor?". Gwamnishu also shared a video where the widow's father-in-law was seen padlocking the gate and locking her outside the house, despite owning another residence.
The young mother is now living in extreme fear for her safety and the well-being of her children, as her in-laws continue to intimidate her and attempt to dispossess her sons of their late father's inheritance. Through Gwamnishu, Tosin has made an urgent appeal to the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) for immediate intervention. She is seeking protection against intimidation, unlawful eviction, and the ongoing attempts by the family to deprive her children of their rightful inheritance.
Gwamnishu, who has also received threats following his public intervention, has called on the Lagos State Police Command to step in and protect the widow. He emphasized the gravity of the situation in his post, stating: "No widow should have to fight for dignity, shelter, and justice just days after losing her husband". The case has sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians condemning the alleged actions of the in-laws and calling on authorities to act swiftly to prevent further victimization. As of the time of this report, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency and the Lagos State Police Command had not issued an official response to the allegations. However, the public outcry continues to grow, with many demanding that Tosin and her children be granted the protection and justice they desperately need.
