The Delta State Government has directed security agencies to track down and prosecute all those responsible for the brutal attack on Simon Mudi, a protocol aide to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, during a political meeting that descended into chaos over the weekend. The government, through the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, condemned the violence, describing the assault on Mudi, popularly known as Temple, as "barbaric and unacceptable". Governor Oborevwori, according to Aniagwu, has instructed security agencies to "identify, arrest and prosecute all those involved" in the incident.
The attack occurred on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Centre in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, during a stakeholders' meeting of the Delta Central All Progressives Congress (APC). According to reports, the gathering, which was attended by high-profile figures including Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo (SAN), Senator Ede Dafinone, and other party leaders, was disrupted by violence. Mudi alleged that he was attacked by over 70 men during the meeting and that a commissioner orchestrated the assault. He claimed to have been stabbed in the back and head, requiring 11 stitches, and said the attackers fled when others moved toward the scene.
The state government said it was "disturbed by videos of the incident circulating on social media, particularly the brutal assault" on Mudi. Aniagwu stressed that the Oborevwori administration would not tolerate violence or lawlessness under any guise, warning that those behind the attack would face the full weight of the law. "The reported acts of violence, particularly the cruel attack on Simon Mudi, are unacceptable and have no place in our society," he said. The commissioner also noted that the state's Commissioner for Works (Urban/Highways), Comrade Reuben Izeze, was also attacked during the melee.
The Delta State APC, however, has denied reports of violence at the meeting, describing them as "reckless, false and sensational". In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, the party insisted that the gathering was peaceful and orderly, and that the viral video cited in reports did not originate from the main conference hall. Mudi, on his part, has demanded justice, alleging that the attack was premeditated and linked to a political rivalry in Ughelli South Local Government Area, where he and a commissioner hails from.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace, law and order, insisting that no individual, irrespective of status or identity, would be allowed to take the law into their own hands. Residents have been urged to remain calm while security agencies carry out investigations. As the hunt for the attackers intensifies, the incident has exposed deep tensions within the Delta APC, raising questions about internal party discipline and the safety of political gatherings in the state.
