The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, has issued a firm assurance that every vote will count in the 2027 general elections, declaring that the will of the Nigerian people is supreme and supersedes the selfish desires of any politician. In a post on his verified X handle on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, Dickson warned politicians plotting to manipulate the electoral process to prepare for disappointment, as Nigerians would resist violence, intimidation, and every attempt to subvert their will at the polls.
Dickson's statement comes amid growing political tension as the 2027 general elections draw closer, with opposition parties positioning themselves to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress. The former Bayelsa State governor, who leads the NDC—one of Nigeria's emerging opposition parties—said those who believe they can use security agencies to intimidate, kill, or harm citizens during elections, or manipulate results in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), would be disappointed.
"I want to assure you that every vote will count. There will be no room for violence, intimidation, or the deployment of security operatives and armed thugs against law-abiding citizens, as some people do," Dickson wrote. He called on Nigerians and members of his party to remain vigilant and prepared to resist attempts to undermine the electoral process through democratic means.
"Together, we must remain vigilant and ready to democratically resist intimidation, oppression, violence, inducements, and every attempt to undermine the will of our people," he added. Dickson also boasted that his political camp had defeated what he described as "federal might" on several occasions in the past. "We have defeated federal might severally before, and, by the grace of God, we shall do so again, with me leading from the front, as you know," he declared.
The NDC, which has unveiled former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, has been actively positioning itself as a formidable opposition force. The party has also expressed openness to coalition talks with other opposition parties ahead of the elections, with Dickson expressing optimism that any alliance would eventually support the NDC's candidates. Despite a recent Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja that raised questions about its legal status, Dickson has insisted that the party will participate fully in the 2027 elections and that its candidates will appear on the ballot.
Dickson's warning against electoral manipulation echoes his earlier statements describing election rigging as the "worst coup" that government officials, security agencies, and the electoral umpire can plan. He has consistently raised concerns over the rising threat of voter apathy and electoral fraud, describing them as significant threats to Nigeria's democracy. The NDC leader's assurance that every vote will count aligns with recent commitments by INEC, which has reaffirmed its dedication to transparent polls and improving electoral processes through technology deployment.
