The Kano State High Court has sentenced a 19-year-old woman, Saudat Jibrin, to death by hanging for the murder of her 30-year-old husband, Salisu Idris, just nine days after their wedding. Justice Maryam Sabo, delivering the judgment on Thursday, July 30, 2026, held that the prosecution had proven the charge of culpable homicide beyond a reasonable doubt. “I hereby sentence Saudat Jibrin to death by hanging for culpable homicide. You have 90 days to appeal,” the judge ruled.
The tragic incident occurred on May 5, 2025, at about 9:00 p.m. at Farawa Quarters in Kano, according to the prosecution led by Lamido Abba-Sorondinki. The prosecutor told the court that Jibrin, a resident of Kumbosto Local Government Area, laced her husband’s “Zoho” drink and then slashed his throat with a knife. Two witnesses were presented to prove the case against the defendant, who denied committing the offence.
The prosecution argued that the offence contravened Section 221(a) of the Penal Code. In her defence, counsel Abdulfatah Muhammad called Jibrin to testify and pleaded for leniency, stating that she had become a changed person while in custody, having memorised the Holy Qur’an. He also urged the court to consider that she is the eldest child of her parents and the primary breadwinner for her siblings. Despite these pleas, the court upheld the prosecution’s case and handed down the maximum penalty.
The case has drawn significant attention due to the bride's young age and the brevity of the marriage. The convict has been granted 90 days to appeal the sentence. Under Nigerian law, while death sentences are often commuted to life imprisonment, the execution of such sentences remains rare, with many convicts spending years on death row.
