The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with two separate culpable homicide cases that claimed the lives of two men in different parts of the state, while intensifying efforts to apprehend at least seven other fleeing suspects linked to the incidents. The arrests followed investigations into a fatal stabbing in Bauchi metropolis and a witchcraft-related mob attack in the Dandango community, both of which have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.
The Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, explaining that the first incident occurred on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at approximately 3:28 p.m. in Unguwan Kur, Bauchi metropolis. According to the police, a 45-year-old resident of the area reported to the 'D' Division, Dutsen Tanshi, that 21-year-old Al-Amin Hamisu Gidado, allegedly acting in concert with another suspect identified as Yahaya Mu'azu—who is currently at large—stabbed 25-year-old Zahradeen Dan'Azumi Tanko in the back. The victim sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, where doctors on duty confirmed him dead on arrival. Police said the principal suspect, Gidado, has been arrested and is currently in custody, while efforts are ongoing to track down Mu'azu, who fled the scene. The case has since been transferred to the SCID for discreet investigation and prosecution.
In a separate incident that underscored the persistence of vigilante violence in rural communities, the police arrested three suspects over the alleged killing of a 51-year-old man, Monday Chiroma, and the assault of another victim, Yelwa Bango, in the Dandango area of Bauchi. The incident was reported at E-Division, Yelwa, on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, after residents brought Chiroma's lifeless body to the police station. Preliminary investigations revealed that on the night of July 20, 2026, a group of individuals allegedly attacked the two victims on suspicion that they were responsible for the alleged bewitching of one Jamila Anthony, a 20-year-old woman who later died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Gudun Hausawa, Bauchi. The attack reportedly occurred around 11:30 p.m., when a group of men stormed a residence in Dandango, targeting Chiroma and Bango for allegedly casting a spell on the young woman. Chiroma was critically injured and later died at a hospital in Gudun Hausawa, while Bango survived after receiving treatment at ATBUTH.
Police operatives swiftly arrested three suspects in connection with Chiroma's death. They were identified as Danjuma Anthony, 25; Ayuba Anthony, also known as "Babaru," 22; and Christopher Adamu, 34. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the attack. However, the police said efforts are ongoing, in collaboration with Danga security operatives and members of the community, to apprehend at least seven other suspects who remain at large. The fleeing suspects were named as Peter Monday, also known as "Maimako"; Joshua Christopher; Babangida Monday; Ali Yakubu; Iliya Yakubu, also known as "Ashe"; Sati Monday; and Bulus Monday, also known as "Gagau." Both victims were taken to ATBUTH, Bauchi, where Chiroma was confirmed dead, while Bango was treated and admitted.
The cases have drawn sharp reactions from the state police leadership. Reacting to the incidents, the Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned both killings and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands. He urged members of the public to shun violence and jungle justice, stressing that all grievances should be reported to the appropriate law enforcement authorities. "The Bauchi State Police Command strongly condemns these incidents and urges members of the public to shun violence and jungle justice. Citizens should report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station rather than resorting to self-help," the Commissioner said in a statement. Aliyu reaffirmed the Command's commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and maintaining peace and public safety across the state.
The arrests highlight the troubling persistence of mob violence and witchcraft accusations in parts of Bauchi State, where community members often resort to extrajudicial punishment. The Commissioner's warning against jungle justice comes amid growing concerns over the frequency of such incidents in rural communities, where suspicion of witchcraft frequently triggers violent reprisals. In the Dandango case, the accusation of bewitching a young woman who later died appears to have been the trigger for the mob attack, leading to the death of Chiroma and the injury of Bango. The police have made it clear that such actions are unacceptable and will be met with the full force of the law.
Meanwhile, the first incident involving the fatal stabbing of Zahradeen Dan'Azumi Tanko has also drawn attention to the prevalence of knife-related violence in Bauchi metropolis. The arrest of the principal suspect, Al-Amin Hamisu Gidado, and the search for his accomplice, Yahaya Mu'azu, underscore the Command's determination to bring all perpetrators to justice. The police have assured the public that investigations into both cases are continuing, and all arrested suspects will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
